How to teach best oral practices to children?

A child’s oral health is a cause of concern for most parents. It’s a situation that has given most parents sleepless nights and hefty bills at the dentists. Oral hygiene is not a habit that’s formed overnight. Most children would fight tooth and nail to get out of their bed time brushing routine. Parents also might find it tedious to argue with their children after a busy day. Like everything else that’s now permanent in your life, one needs to instill these habits in children. It needs to come as second nature to them, so that they can be protected from cavities and periodontal disease as they grow up. This, however, seems to be easier said than done and getting a child to do these activities as a routine, can be a Herculean task. So how do we make children follow a routine without any hassle? Here are a few tips.

How to teach best oral practice to children?

  • Imitation is the best form of flattery and more often than not, children emulate your habits. Next time you brush, make your child stand next to you with a brush and soon you will find him copying your actions.

  • Make the activity interesting. Make up a song about brushing and it will no more become a task. A fun tooth brush can also pique your child’s interest in the activity.

  • Repetition is the key to good dental hygiene. Stay persistent with your child’s brushing routine.
  • Use a 2 minute sand timer. Let your child flip it and then start brushing.

  • You can make a progress report for your child. Keep a track of all the days he brushes twice and at the end of the week; he can be given a gold star sticker.

As a parent, make sure your child visits the dentist biannually. Ensure that these practices become habits and you can reap the results as they grow older. Do not give up half way through.

In the words of Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.”
