The Indian Orthodontic Society (IOS) was established on 5th October 1965 by seven founding members, and this is the reason that the dentist community celebrates this day as ‘Orthodontists Day’ in India. The IOS is a part of the World Federation of Orthodontics and has close to 10,000 life and student members!
It has 6 main goals that lay down the foundations of operations of IOS
1) Educate the Indian people about the importance of orthodontics
2) Promote and safeguard the interest of Orthodontists in India
3) Foster friendship and brotherhood amongst the members of the society
4) Popularize and promote the study of orthodontics
5) Popularize and spread the orthodontic practice
6) Carry out research through by setting up subsidized clinics for the people
The society has an established board known as the Indian Board of Orthodontics which is first such board in the field of dentistry and it ranks third in the world! It has various publications and events that are conducted throughout the year providing a platform for the orthodontists to get recognition on a national level
The society also has a dedicated website that provides all information, registration and other formalities! With the establishment of the society and its functional machinery, it has become possible to achieve structured progress in the field!
